Laser Procedures

Laser Retinopexy

Laser Retinopexy is a localized laser procedure performed around retinal tears to reduce the risk of further tearing and possible retinal detachment.

Lasers, or “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”, have many applications in modern healthcare, and eye care is no exception! Lasers aid in procedures ranging from glaucoma treatments to refractive surgeries, and throughout decades of use, the use of laser technology in eye care has been found to be safe, extremely precise, and repeatable.

Refractive Surgery

  • LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) are the two most common refractive surgeries performed today.

  • Although many patients are candidates for refractive surgery, some are not. A comprehensive eye examination accompanied by special testing is required. Make an appointment with your eye care provider to see if you might be a candidate for refractive surgery.

Cataract Surgery

  • FLACS, also known as "Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery", is the newest technique allowing ophthalmologists to remove the cataract and reduce astigmatism safely and more efficiently.

  • A YAG (Yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser procedure is the laser procedure allowing ophthalmologists to remove a filmy haze that has grown over the posterior capsule after cataract surgery.

  • Peripheral Iridotomy is the laser procedure used to create an opening in the iris (the colored part of the eye) for an alternative flow of the aqueous humor. In angle-closure glaucoma, the angle in the eye is too narrow and can close causing fluid to build up creating an increase in eye pressure and damage to the optic nerve.

  • A Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) procedure is the laser procedure used to aid in decreasing the intraocular pressure for glaucoma by creating spots on the trabecular meshwork by which fluid can escape from the eye. Your doctor will determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
